Accountability partners help us make the most of every situation.  Being more productive is not just about getting things done.  It means we are making the most of every minute.  It means we are fulfilling and living our purpose.  It means we capitalize on the opportunities given to us to have the most positive impact possible.

Today I want to share with you the experience of one person who decided to make a big change and invest in accountability partners…

ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER STORY

Last year, I had the most productive year of my life. I worked out regularly, doubled the revenue of my business and got shit done on time.

When I was building my first startup, I would procrastinate all the time. I would take “breaks” that extended 3 hours longer than they should’ve. I would often scroll Facebook, close Facebook and open it up again like an idiot.

At one point, things got so bad that I thought about hiring an assistant who would slap me when I would procrastinate.

A good mentor of mine told me that he was able to cure his procrastination with a simple trick.

He told me to get accountability partners who would check-in with me regularly. Even though it sounded so simple, I decided to give it a shot.

MY ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER CHANGED EVERYTHING

In 2015, on a good day, I would put in 2-3 hours of productive work. Today, I average 6.5 hours a day.

For science nerds – The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% of completing a goal if you commit to someone. And if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.

When you are accountable to someone for doing what you said you would do, you can easily get stuff done because you engage the power of social expectations. When you tell your boss you will get the proposal done by the end of the week, you are more likely to stick to it and do it. When you tell a client you’ll send over a report, you deliver.

The expectation alone is enough motivation to get you to commit to it and get it done. However, when you tell yourself — and no one else — that you will quit smoking, start a new gym routine, write a book, launch a meaningful project or quit your “just okay” job in order to pursue your life’s work, you are less likely to do it. It’s easy to choose something else more comfortable and make excuses.

My accountability partner holds me accountable. I hold him accountable. I don’t want to let him down, he doesn’t want to let me down.

There’s a bunch of different ways to find an accountability partner. I’d first look at your personal network – friends & family. You can always go to www.accountabilitypartners.co or www.meetup.com or post at www.indiehackers.com forum to get connected with folks.

Hope this helps!

Living on  purpose, with intent and fulfilment, means living a productive life.  If you feel you aren’t making the most of each hour you’ve been given, perhaps an accountability partner can help.  Who do you know that is willing to invest in your life as an accountability partner?

Do you happen to have a link to the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) study? Did a quick search, but didn’t find much.

This is a really fantastic post and I completely agree. When left to my own devices I can slack off a bit, but when someone else is involved, I become a machine!

Thank you for this post. I’m going to go find my accountability partner!

      Hello ,

I saw your tweet about animals and thought I will check your website. I like it!

I love pets. I have two beautiful thai cats called Tammy(female) and Yommo(male). Yommo is 1 year older than Tommy. He acts like a bigger brother for her. 🙂
I have even created an Instagram account for them ( https://www.instagram.com/tayo_home/ ) and probably soon they will have more followers than me (kinda funny).

I have subscribed to your newsletter. 🙂

Keep up the good work on your blog.

      Regards
