LIVING YOUR TRUE CALLING IS THE KEY TO HAPPINESS, CONTENTMENT, AND A MEANINGFUL LIFE

No Happiness. No Satisfaction. No Excitement. – That’s the way you feel when you have not discovered your true calling in life. Nothing means anything to you!

Have you ever had the feeling that everyone’s life seems to be flourishing? Everyone seems to be on top of their game. Everyone is enjoying what they are doing!

Yet, you feel stuck!

You wake up early, go to work early, put in your best, and receive a good salary at the end of the month. This is what you’ve been told for all your life that you need to be doing this.  Still, you feel like something is missing in your life. I get it, you are not alone! Most people today are living unfulfilled lives because they have yet to discover their true calling in life!

After all, a life without a purpose is an empty life!

Now, this may shock you, but the harsh truth is that life isn’t just about growing up, getting a job, taking a few vacations, retiring, and dying.   You know deep inside that there is more to life than this vicious cycle, this box most people can’t seem to escape.

Nowadays, an average person lives his life in a circle. First, you think money can solve all your problems. So, you say to yourself, I will go to college, get a degree and a job. Years later, you have lots of money in your bank account but still very much unhappy.

You then thought that finding love will solve your problem – “You will become happy and fulfilled once you find love”. So, you get a wife or husband. Yet, happiness is still elusive. For most people, at some point, they give up the pursuit of happiness and just settle for what they have. They start to believe that happiness is just a myth. Nobody can truly be happy.

There Is A Negative Side

Perhaps, people not finding their true calling or their purpose in life is part of the reason why depression and suicide are on the rise in America and other developed countries despite the wealth these countries have in their possession. World Health Organization estimates that over 4% of the world’s population has depression (over 300 million people), with over 800,000 suicides per year. Guess where most of these people come from? Yes, from the so-called rich and developed country.

So you see, it is not about how wealthy you are! Money cannot buy happiness, after all!

I believe one of the contributing factors is people living without the knowledge of their true calling.  Life actually feels boring and uninteresting when you have no purpose, but feels different when you have discovered your true calling. Unfortunately, you cannot discover your true calling in life unless you establish a strong connection with who you really are!

What’s a True Calling?

“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.” – Stephen Covey

To be clear, let me explain what true calling is all about. It is your life’s purpose and this is very much different from your goals. Your goals are simply what you want to achieve. This could be getting a degree, a job, a new car, or having children. It is possible to pursue your current goals for the next 5 or 20 years, only to realize that this isn’t what you wanted after all.

Your true calling is the entire point of your existence!  It is divinely inspired and it is the core of our soul.

Your true calling or life purpose, on the other hand, has a positive effect on you AND on others. It is doing or sharing something that has a strong emotional impact on yourself and impacts the lives of the people in your sphere of influence. Sometimes, this could even be denying yourself some things just to make others happier and better!

To be truly happy, fulfilled, content, and most importantly, to experience inner peace, it is very important that you learn how to find your true calling. Because the truth is that until you find your life’s calling, you will never experience true happiness and ultimate fulfillment.

Do you know that discovering your purpose can help you live longer?

In a study of 136,000 men and women, it was found that when people indicated a clear purpose in their lives and work, they had a 23% reduction in mortality and a 19% reduction in cardiovascular events. This study was done by Preventative Cardiologist, Dr. Randy Cohen, also a Medical Director of University of Medical Practice Associates at Mount Sinai St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

Are You Living a Life of Purpose?

“It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something” - Winston S. Churchill.

Often time, when we see the icons of popular culture driving designer cars, flying private jets or living the life of fame, we think these people have arrived because they have amassed so much wealth and notoriety. This is not surprising, our culture teaches us to measure success by the wealth they've accumulated, the power they've attained, their popularity, or the status they've achieved. Yet, while it is true that these people may have reached the peak of their career – many of them still feel an emptiness inside. They feel that something is missing from their life.

Live is usually filled with loneliness, lack of satisfaction, and despair when no specific purpose has been embraced.

Living a life of Purpose is all about discovering your true calling and answering in every way that you can. It is about asking the life's two biggest questions; WHY and most importantly, HOW.

A purpose sets the entire context for our lives. Purpose is not something that others choose for us; rather, it is something we must choose to live for ourselves. You could define purpose as the message you wish to drive in the world during your time on Earth.

A life purpose is for you as far as you wish to live a more meaningful and conscious life. It doesn't matter if you are a teenager, youth, married, or already in your latter years.

A life purpose is a powerful shaping force for your life, it includes your vision, passions, core values, and the essence of who you are. It is a container in which you pour your life. It encompasses all of your life and becomes an expression of who you are when you are reaching your full potential - Centerstone.org

Perhaps, the greatest tragedy of life today is that most people are not living a life of purpose and they don't even know it. This could be YOU. You are not living a life of purpose if any of the following defines you:

  • You got to the top but it feels darn lonely
  • You’re not waking up excited in the morning
  • Your life isn’t entirely fulfilling you anymore
  • You are working in a job that you really hate
  • You feel stuck in the “rat race” but don’t know the next step

According to Seneca, "when a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind". People do all sorts of things - like buying expensive things because they want to fill an emptiness inside them. You only feel this way because you are NOT living a life of purpose.

When you discover your life's true calling and start living a life of purpose, you will have:

  • Clarity on what is important
  • Constant drive and passion
  • Every morning feeling great and happy with no apparent reason
  • A more meaningful life
  • The feeling like nothing can stop you
  • You see your efforts produce results
  • Things happen more easily and obstacles don’t seem as big
  • Your life becomes more satisfying, fulfilling and fun
  • Ultimate satisfaction every day becomes your reward

To start living a life of purpose today, pay attention to what you do that makes your heart leap. Notice what usually makes you most happy and fulfilled. Each of us gravitates towards something as we go through life. That was instilled in your soul at the very beginning of your life.  It is why it brings you so much fulfillment.

Try to discover what you are gravitating to. You can bring your life purpose to reality if you are really determined and focus.

How to Know What To Do With Your Life

We all see our life's purpose differently. That’s because your purpose is unique and individual to you alone.  You were created with a very specific purpose to be lived in your life.  Of course, you have the free will to choose whether you will live it or not.

Regardless, you have a strong desire in your live toward that calling.  It would be impossible to list every possible option.  After all, there are over 7 billion people in the world.  Maybe it is about striving to stay pure in mind and deed, setting that example for others.  For others it is about being of service to others.

Just remember, your true calling is more about WHO you are than WHAT you do.

It doesn't really matter what your calling is, there is a need to have a clearly defined and customized purpose. Purpose is not something that others choose for us; rather, it is something we must choose to live for ourselves. Irrespective of what stage you are at in life, if you are unhappy with it, or unsure as to how to proceed, then you need to reevaluate.

Some people are lucky to discover this early in life as a teenager or youth, others aren't. We see people at almost every age accomplishing great things.

Never Too Late To Find Your True Calling

People like Harlan David Sanders, the founder of KFC started very late in life. They discovered their purpose at old age and still made an impact on their generation. Sanders started KFC when he was 65 years old. There are other stories like Sanders such as:

  • Ray Kroc - Founded today’s version of McDonalds as 52-year old
  • Soichiro Honda - Founded Honda Motor Company when he has 42 years old
  • Anna Mary Robertson Moses - Was 76 when she drew her world-famous art on canvas
  • Kathryn Joosten - Became an Emmy Award Winning Actress at 56
  • Julia Child published her first world best-selling cookbook when she was 49.
  • Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Was 69 when he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
  • Winston Churchill - finally became England’s prime minister at the ripe old age of 62.

I don’t know if these accomplishments were aligned with their Purpose in life, but the point is that it is never too late to start.

So, you see! You don't have to give up just because you didn't start early. Don't settle. Forget about age. You can start today to discover your life purpose and become truly free and happy.

Thank you for following my blog!

Rachel, looking forward to great things!

    • Michele Anderson

I agree Richard. If you don’t take the time to find your true calling you will just be miserable. Parents need to take the time to help their children figure out what they really want to do in life. Without some guidance it truly is hard and you can get lost along the way.

      • Richard Yadon

So true Michele. It is important to distinguish “helping” from “telling”. It is okay to have wishes, dreams, and aspirations for our children, but not to tell them what their calling has to be.
