YOU ARE NOT ALONE – EVERYONE HAS WORK LIFE BALANCE CHALLENGES

Just about everyone these days has to figure out a way to balance life and work. The work life balance challenges we each face are both unique and similar.

Below are some tips that I’ve used to keep my passions in harmony. You might find some help in these.

1. Knowing Your Priorities

Regardless of how much you would like to get accomplished each day, you only have 24 hours. For this reason, you must learn to set your priorities.

Take a look at all the things you want to get done including:

– High priority projects at work

– Exercising more often

– Spending more time with your children

– Taking an evening class

Now you must determine which items are most important to you. If you want to spend more time with your children, then schedule certain time periods for this.

While you may want to take an evening class, how important is this to you?

Are you trying to improve your education to get a better paying job?

Or is it for pleasure – define and set your priorities.

2. Planning In Advance

Your week is likely extremely busy.  There always seems to be more commitments than time.

If preparing meals is difficult and you tend to resort to fast food, start planning and preparing meals on the weekend. Use the leftovers for Monday’s meal.

With a little advance planning and preparing you can feed healthy meals to your family and reduce your eating out budget.

3. Share Responsibilities

This applies to both your job and your home life. If you are feeling overwhelmed at work, is it possible to delegate certain projects to a co-worker?  A conversation with your boss may reveal that they are unaware of your sense of overwhelm.

4.  Know When Your Are Most Productive

Are you a morning person?

If you are, take on those tough, high-concentration tasks to the mornings. If  am more of  morning person, preferring to knock out the toughest part of the day as soon as I can.  I know I am more motivated and creative in the morning.  Having a morning ritual has also added enormous power to my ability to keep my passions in harmony.

Others might find that quiet time in the evening is best for them.

Don’t leave the tough tasks for the times when you are less productive, creative, and motivated.

5. Build A Productive Work Environment

I am currently self-employed.  Working for yourself does tend to require long hours and not much downtime, so I invest in equipment that will support me.

You can do the same whether you are self-employed or not.

That includes getting a comfortable chair, an ergonomic keyboard, a support stand for your laptop, etc.  An ergonomic assessment of your workspace is worth every cent.

6. Make exercise a must-do, not a should-do

It’s easy to cancel the gym, the evening run or the yoga class because a client wants something done yesterday.  It’s easy to let family commitments, activities, and errands justify why you aren’t taking care of your body.

Instead, ensure exercise is given as much priority as your family and making money. You aren’t going to be much use to anyone if you are always sick and tired.

A healthy body means a fresh mind, which means you will function better and complete tasks in less time.

I have used the Old School New Body system for over a year.  It has been the best program of exercise and nutrition for my busy life.

7. Get Real About What You Can and Can’t Do

At the end of each working day, perform a little self-analysis. Ask yourself what worked today, what didn’t, what went wrong and how the issue can be fixed.

Remember there are thousands of people just like your learning the same lessons every day. Don’t forget to tap into the valuable resources around you– your peers– for help.

At home you don’t have to be the super parent, there is nothing wrong with asking for help. Delegate chores to your children, even young children can help tidying up and vacuum.

If you and your spouse need a break ask another family member if they could watch your kids for the evening or weekend. When was the last time they stayed over at their grandparents? This can be a great way to free up some time to spent together and both your kids and the grandparents will love spending time together.

Use these top tips to add a sense of stability and balance back into your life. There is no need to feel overwhelmed at home or at work. Asking for help can bring you rewards you never dreamed of.
