FREE GUIDE - 5 Steps To Finding Your Purpose In Life

Find The Intersection of Your Passion, Profession, and Purpose!

In the movie ‘Jerry Maquire‘, Jerry starts considering his mission statement,  dreaming and talks to himself…”Who had I become? A shark in a suit? I hated myself. I hated my place in this world.” Startled from the dream he attacks his laptop keyboard and begins to craft a personal manifesto that, he hopes, will change his life. This Personal Mission Statement creates some radical changes for him. He goes from ruin to redemption all in the space of two hours! Jerry wrote his mission statement in the depths of his darkest hours. Sometimes that is what it takes for us to be jolted into change.

Does it always have to happen at the bottom of the abyss? Not at all. You can craft your Personal Mission Statement at any time. It can be rewritten, revised, and updated as little or as often as you want. You can do it alone or with the help of family and close friends. Once written it becomes your lighthouse on the coast. It cuts through the fog of life’s gray situations. The Personal Mission Statements helps clarify priorities, helps you see your purpose more clearly, and gives clues about your purpose driving passion. For these reasons alone it is worth the effort.

I’ve found no set standard for Personal Mission Statements. They are — personal. So you can write them anyway you want. My friend Leary Gates has an excellent process for writing one, he calls it “the resume for your future“. You might also want to look at the examples of personal mission statements of five famous CEOs to give you some inspiration.  How you go about it is not important. What is important is that you take the time to write it down.

The Personal Mission Statement is the first step toward pursuing your passion and purpose. Set time aside this week to get started.
