Sometimes when life seems out of sorts, you can find balanced life therapy when you help individuals in need. People who assist feel as though they made a difference in the life of others. It also calls to your inner feelings of hope that people would do it for you if you require help.
You feel as though you helped move the world closer to the way you where it needs to be when you volunteer for causes you believe in.
Giving to others can also help you meet new and interesting people. Socializing gives you a sense of belonging and frankly, it’s fun.
UNINTENDED BENEFITS IN VOLUNTEERING
Meeting people through volunteering also has the unintentional consequence of networking. You never ever know who you will meet and who can influence your career or business. Don’t let me confuse you, this is not the balanced life therapy I’m writing about. You do not want to volunteer for the sole function of networking. You must volunteer to assist people. Networking is just a natural consequence of the activity.
Companies who are concerned with employee work life balance see the benefits of volunteering as well. More companies are asking staff members to volunteer. Many of these companies will enable their employees to take time off work to volunteer.
If you are asked to volunteer for an organization or cause you don’t support, ask if there are other organizations the company supports. Another alternative is to offer to volunteer for the organizations you do support. It’s not ideal but, it is better than volunteering for organizations you do not prefer.
Another benefit of volunteering at work is you often do it as a group or team activity. That brings you closer to the group and provides you a chance to build a deeper relationship with your co-workers. It provides you something more than just work to share with individuals in your group. After the volunteering event is complete, the group goes together for food and beverages.
People who volunteer discover it helps keep them. They see first hand that individuals are less fortunate and provides them a viewpoint they wouldn’t have actually received by not giving. It also has the potential to raise the spirits of the people being helped. Seeing others benefit from your efforts is very uplifting.
